SALES promotions can give additional income to workers, especially with the rise in membership shopping.

Although she declined to disclose figures, Frances Carreon, assistant vice president for membership of Landers Superstore, said they triple the number of their workers every time they mount special sale activities like its own “super crazy sale” and “anniversary sale,” which runs for at least three days.

Carreon said big activities take three weeks of preparation, so they need more help, especially during the actual sale.

She said they usually need additional hands to fill and refill the display shelves, attend to customer inquiries, and bouncer and security personnel for organized shopping, both inside and outside the shopping facility.

“We usually have an overnight team during sale events who stay on to make sure that the store is ready for the next day,” she said.

Landers Superstore is a Cebuano-owned membership shopping chain. It currently has five branches in the country, mostly located in Manila and one in Cebu.

The retail chain is currently celebrating its second year in Cebu with a five-day anniversary treat for its members. It is offering 50 percent off on home products, bakery, cafe and fresh produce.

Pinky Angodung, Landers Superstore marketing director, said they are happy with the Cebu store’s performance.

“Cebuanos’ reception was good. We could attribute this to our good location. Our accessibility makes Cebuanos frequent the store,” she said.

In the past two years, membership base at Landers Cebu is steadily rising, according to Angodung, dominated by young individuals and young mothers. She said they also log positive performance for members renewing their membership.

“We have attracted a young market that is familiar with the business model,” she said.

Landers Superstore carries over 7,000 products, mostly imported goods.

The company though has no definite plans yet of opening another brick and mortar store in Cebu in the near-term, but Angodung said they will be strengthening their presence in the digital space through online shopping to cater to the young and tech-savvy market.

Shoppers can now buy items at the Landers website and have them delivered to their houses. At present, the storenow offers free delivery to its member-shoppers.

“We did this in Manila in March. For Cebu, we hope to launch this before the end of the first semester,” she said.

Retail was one of the industries that reaped high income last year, according to the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) 7, driven by the construction rebound and the steady growth in the tourism and information and technology-business process management fronts.

This year, Neda 7 expects a positive economic outlook for the region.

“The upcoming elections is expected to have a positive impact...while consumer spending is expected to rise, with inflation back within government’s target of two to four percent,” said Neda 7 Director Efren Carreon. (KOC)
