Tell it to SunStar: If only for check and balance

By Baye Sendrijas Jr., Minglanilla, Cebu

I must admit that despite my being supportive of President Rodrigo Duterte and his programs, I cannot in conscience fully support all the candidates that the administration is pushing in this mid-term elections.

I only supported Duterte because a strongman is what we needed in a time when we have to uproot all the evil in our politics and society. However, I don’t quite understand what goes on in his head when he endorses the very persons we have opposed and condemned before because they have been known to be corrupt.

Take, for example, Imee Marcos or Jinggoy Estrada. Imee has never shown any remorse for all the things that her family had done to the country. I also don’t understand why people are supporting her. The fact that the banks are now giving the money they stole during their time to the victims of Martial Law proves that there, indeed, was stealing. There is money and therefore there was something that was stolen. Why can’t people understand that basic equation? Has logic left people’s minds?

So I would vote for the opposition candidates. If only to have check and balance. If only to create a kind of fiscalizing in the legsilative halls of Congress. I can’t imagine power without an adversary. Didn’t we say that absolute power corrupts absolutely?

So I’d like to have representation that comes from the other side. We need dialogue in the Senate so we can hear better the sides to an argument. In short, so that government can’t leave us blind with the things that they are imposing on us.

I think in legislative debates, we should not leave ay corner unlit by arguments. We should not leave any stone unturned, to so speak. That’s why we need a good dose of opposition in government.
