2 officials killed in separate gun attacks

TWO government officials were killed in two separate gun attacks Saturday, May 4, in the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported.

Councilor Edgardo Viñas, Liga ng mga Barangay president in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte, was gunned down around 11:58 a.m. Saturday while Ibrahim Ungad, village chief of New Labangan in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur, was shot dead almost seven hours later.

Police Brigadier General Emmanuel Luis Licup, Police Regional Office (PRO)-Zamboanga Peninsula director, said Viñas, 49, was gunned down in the village hall of La Roche, Sindangan town.

Licup said Viñas had just adjourned the session when a lone gunman shot him and fled aboard a motorcycle.

Viñas was rushed to Sindangan District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Ungad, meanwhile, had just gone out of his residential compound when he was gunned down around 6:45 p.m. in Purok Caimito, Tuburan, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

The regional director said the gunman fled towards Tiguma, Pagadian City on board a motorcycle.

He said investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest the gunmen in the two incidents. (SunStar Philippines)
