Masbad: Folding phone: An idea for one

DAVE Lee put up this video last week about folding phones in light of the recent launches by Samsung and Huawei.

And this quickly got my interest.

Well, for one, that’s a leaked photo or concept design of the Motorola RAZR. Undeniably, that’s one of my favorite phones that I have ever had the chance of owning. And if this actually comes into fruition, I’d definitely get one for myself. The RAZR form factor coupled with a vanilla-flavored Android implementation (just like the Pixels) and I think there’s a winner there already.

As for the form factor, I would like to imagine that they do the same thing with the iconic RAZR of mid-2000s. It folds into half of its size, just a bit taller than wider. Again, just like the original one. In its folded form factor, it will fit any pocket out there. Probably including those skinny jeans pockets and feels so tight it might actually be constricting blood flow. Well, kidding aside, I really think that the original RAZR’s size when folded is perfect.

And as to when it’s folded out, the all-screen design concept is the way to go. Sure, it may not be the best screen out there for watching hi-def movies or shows, but as long as it’s screen quality is at par with the competition, it should be good. Of course, it has to be an OLED display. I think that’s going to be the norm here.

Now, how about the camera. Well, this is where I’d dare say that Motorola work with Google on this. Let’s face it, the Pixels cameras are up there in terms of image quality and the many other things that it can do. Motorola can’t afford to eff up the design language of the RAZR with triple- or quad- or quin-camera systems in it. All those ports for the multiple lenses will just ruin the entire thing. If the camera is the same camera they put on the Pixels, I’m okay with that. And I think that’s going to be a great move for Motorola in terms of implementation of the design. They won’t have to need a lot of time to come up with an in-house designed camera system for the new RAZR. Sure they can but then what if they come up short as far as expectations go? Bummer, right?

And for battery life, things have come a long way in that department. Battery technologies have evolved. There are batter technology researchers out there that have managed to come up with innovative solutions. I’m pretty sure that somewhere out there, there’s a company that will be able to provide a light, thin batter but with an energy capacity bigger than what is currently available.

So, yeah. A foldable phone like the original RAZR. Can you imagine it already? I know I can.

Let’s just hope they actually decide to make this dream phone.
