Surgery defers Gorres’ rehab

RETIRED boxing star Z Gorres was supposed to start his rehabilitation at the Perpetual Succuor last Monday. However, it will take a while before he resumes his rehabilitation because he underwent a minor throat surgery yesterday at the Cebu Doctors Hospital.

Gorres’ throat was operated on by Dr. Gary Rivera to improve his breathing, which was blocked due to an infection.

“Z was hospitalized in the past two days because he had problem breathing. It is because of an infection in his throat,” said ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer in an interview by Sun.Star Cebu. “Something was blocking the passage of air and they had to open it up a bit,” he added.

Recovery

Aldeguer said that Gorres, 27, will stay in the hospital for another two days to recuperate from the minor surgery.

“It depends on his recovery. Once he’s recovered he can start his rehab,” said the young promoter.

Because Gorres is currently in the hospital, he won’t be able to attend the press conference tomorrow with interim World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. at the Loft Restaurant and Lounge. Instead his wife Datches will be there. Donaire is allegedly giving Gorres assistance.

“I’m not sure what’s his plan for Z,” said Aldeguer. “Nonito’s a nice guy.”

Gorres suffered a life-threatening head injury after being hit by Colum-bian Luis Melendez with a vicious left last Nov.13 at the Mandalay Bay House of Blues.

Friends

Donaire and Gorres are acquainted with each other after training in the same boxing gym for a while.

Donaire trained at the ALA Gym for two months in 2007 after preparing for his title defense against Mexican veteran Luis Maldonado.

Gorres was declared the winner of the fight via a lopsided unanimous decision but on his way out of the ring he collapsed.

He was immediately rushed to the University Medical Center, where he underwent an emergency brain surgery to alleviate the swelling on his brain.
