THE Office of the City Treasurer assured the public that the election paraphernalia under its custody are safe.
City Treasurer Romelita Candido said Monday, May 6, that the official ballots and other election paraphernalia that will be used for the upcoming May 13 polls have been placed in a secure vault.
As additional precautions, Candido said access to the vault has been limited to only the supply officer, and employees are forbidden to stay at City Hall after 6 p.m.
Candido has also requested the assistance of city police to beef up security in the area in the days leading to the election.
The custodial responsibility of the city treasurer for elections has legal basis in the Omnibus Election Code.
According to the election code, custody of election paraphernalia, supplies, and materials are entrusted to the custody of the provincial, city, and municipal treasury, for preservation and storage.
"That's the reason why it was delivered and entrusted to our office," Candido said.
She added that the ballots and election paraphernalia were stored in the City Treasurer's Office at City Hall to reduce security risks and because it is the official residence of the city treasurer. (SunStar Philippines)
