Davao karatekas shine

KARATE Pilipinas Region 11 brought home two gold medals and seven bronzes at the close of the 1st Karate Pilipinas All Division National Championships held at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City over the weekend.

Sofia Agullo and Aldren Solon clinched the golds for the Rommel Tan-coached team.

Bronze winners were Ian Carlos Pascual II, Atsuko Kaiyel Tan, Janna Alexandrea Ramirez, Gabriel Quiñones, Sam Cartagena and Jammel Taunan

Tan was satisfied with the performance of the region’s karatekas considering that all eight entries won medals in the tournament that drew over 500 participants from all regions in the country.

“We brought eight players, seven from AAK Davao and one from UM (University of Mindanao) Davao and all won medals so for me good job for the athletes,” he said in a Facebook interview with SunStar Davao yesterday.

He said that the event was the first national open of Karate Pilipinas, the new federation recognized by the World Karate Federation and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.

“Only regional championship winners, gold and silver, were allowed to compete in the tournament,” Tan, who was set to arrive in Davao City as of yesterday presstime, added.

He then thanked Jay and Jo Anne Ramirez, Sharon cartagena, Richard Lu, Emery Neble, Jovita and Robert Quiñoones, Giselle Bohol and Karate Pilipinas 11 for their support to the team.
