THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) assured on Tuesday, May 7, that they are ready to secure the midterm elections on Monday, May 13, with the deployment of nearly 250,000 men nationwide.

A send-off ceremony and inter-faith prayers were held for the securiy forces Tuesday at the AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

In a joint AFP-PNP press conference, AFP Chief of Staff General Benjamin Madrigal said at least 98,000 soldiers and 143,000 policemen will be deployed before, during and after Election Day.

He said thousands of volunteers have also partnered with the AFP and PNP in ensuring that the elections would be clean, safe and secured.

As of Tuesday, Madrigal said they have not monitored any threat to the upcoming political exercise.

PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde, for his part, said the AFP and the PNP are continuously conducting intelligence monitoring to thwart all possible threats during the election.

At the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, the PNP launched the National Election Monitoring Action Center (Nemac) which monitors in real time the situation on the ground through the local EMAC established in all police offices nationwide.

He said the Nemac will be operated by at least 60 personnel.

“Una, it will give us real time situation on what is happening on the ground pati ‘yung pag-deliver ng mga vote counting machines doon sa mga iba-ibang polling centers and dito kung gusto natin malaman kung ano sitwasyon natin click lang natin kung anong polling center yan and we will know kung sino talaga ang naka-deploy doon and we can call directly to that police officer who is deployed in that specific polling center kasi nandyan ‘yung pangalan at cellphone number,” said Albayalde.

(It will provide us with the real time situation on the ground, including information on the delivery of vote countring machines to the different polling centers. We will also know who is deployed in which polling center and we can directly call the officer deployed at a specific polling center because we have the names and their mobile numbers.)

“Real time ito, malaman natin kung anong oras nag-start ‘yung polling or botohan sa polling center at malaman natin kung anong oras tumigil at malaman din natin kung tapos na ba bilangan sa polling center at malaman natin kung nag-close at dineliver back to the treasurer's office ‘yung mga ballot boxes. Ito ‘yung makikita natin, real time situation. So you don't have to go the locations anymore. Pwede mo i-monitor kasi real time ito,” he added.

(This is real time. We will know what time voting started and ended at a certain polling center, whether counting of votes is done and whether the ballot boxes have been sent back to the treasurer's office.) (SunStar Philippines)
