IN HONOR of late congressman Prospero Nograles, a councilor is pushing to recognize the former lawmaker's legacy by naming one of the streets in Davao City after him.

Councilor Elias Lopez asked Tuesday, May 7, for the support of the council in renaming a street, road, building, and edifice after Nograles, who served in public service for more than 20 years.

Lopez proposed to rename the stretch of road from Quirino Avenue going to Ma-a Road as Prospero Nograles Avenue.

"By naming a street (it will be) some sort of remembrance that is permanent, (it) is seen by all. Every day, we are reminded that there is a person here who had done a lot of sacrifice, who had projected himself and worked hard for the lives of the Dabawenyos," he said in an interview.

Lopez said Nograles implemented a lot of projects, especially in improving the road infrastructures in the city.

"Any person who has contributed a lot to the progress and development of the city must be recognized by the people. He has implemented a lot of projects, improved the lives of the people especially in the first district," he said.

"It is just fitting that the city will extend that kind of honor," he added.

Meanwhile, members of the City Council, through a privilege speech read by Councilor Pilar Braga, were saddened by the untimely demise of Nograles.

"We would like to extend our condolences to the family. Nogie has really served Davao city, and his constituents and even the entire country, back when he was still a speaker," Braga read.

Nograles served his first term as representative of the First District of Davao City in 1989, a post he again won in 1995 and held for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2010.

Nograles also became the first Mindanaoan House Speaker, from 2008 to 2010, under the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

He died on May 4 due to respiratory failure, secondary to pneumonia.
