Tell it to SunStar: Enforce the law

SIR, we have breaking of the peace issues here on the island. Specifically, fish vendors are allowed to broadcast their wares with loud speakers from tricycles from dawn until past dusk throughout the neighborhoods of Camiguin. There is an ordinance that prohibits this from going on, but despite this, the local government and police will not do anything about it. They are more concerned about keeping their power through votes than enforcing the law.

I have heard numerous complaints from tourists being roused from a sound sleep in their cottages by these vendors. It is not good for business!

Yet, when contacted, the barangay captains, governor, mayor and police do nothing about it.

I hesitate to give my name because I do not want to be found one day shot in the back of the head and left for dead in some rice field, so please do not pass it along. Killings have happened here. Is there anything the government can do about this?

We cannot pick and choose which laws to obey and enforce. To do so is corruption and chaos.

Also, a visit to the local sandbar (White Island) has always been free for residents. Now, however, this corrupt government charges a fee for a visit enforced by the Coast Guard. What’s the next fee, a look at Hibok-Hibok? The government will use the Coast Guard to enforce a fee for White Island, but looks the other way when it comes to enforcing anti-noise laws against fish vendors.

I guess there is no money to be made enforcing that ordinance? Or maybe there is money to be made not enforcing it. (Concerned citizen, Camiguin Island)
