Judge killed in Zamboanga del Norte

(UPDATED) - A judge was killed Thursday, May 9, in another shooting incident in Zamboanga del Norte.

Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 11 Judge Reymar Lacaya, 62, was shot dead at around 3 p.m. Thursday at the parking area of the RTC in Liloy town, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer Helen Galvez said.

Liloy, a third-class town in Zamboanga del Norte, was once a barangay of Sindangan. It was inaugurated as a municipality in 1951.

Galvez said initial investigation showed that Lacaya was alone at the RTC parking area when he was shot by an unidentified assailant.

Lacaya died on the way to the Liloy District Hospital.

Galvez said they learned that Lacaya was transferred to Liloy from Sindangan just three months ago.

In a statement, Supreme Court Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin and the entire judiciary condemned "in the strongest possible terms" the killing of Lacaya.

Bersamin urged authorities to exert their best efforts in immediately apprehending those responsible for Lacaya’s death.
