Llavor-Deita: Guns, goons, gold and freedom

MARTIN Luther King, Jr. once said, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Filipinos can very much relate to this saying in our hope for freedom this coming May 13, 2019. May 13 is the day where we exercise our right to suffrage. This is the day where we want change for our nation. But are we safe to go to the precinct and cast our votes? Will there be no “dagdag-bawas “votes this time?

Why do I have these questions? It is because I have never heard of any peaceful scenario about the elections so far. Guns, goons and gold are always mentioned. Recently, the death of a certain political candidate was on the headline. Vote-buying is also a trending topic. Military men and police officers are being deployed to the different “hot spots” of the country.

We have heard of what happened in the town of Moises Padilla when the relatives of the town’s vice mayor were ambushed and killed. Prior to that, a certain re-electionist councilor of the same town was also killed while another councilor in Escalante City was shot dead. Can we not have an election where campaigns are about their platforms and people are free to vote without any fear of being killed? Is it really necessary to have guns, goons and gold in order for a political candidate to win?

Life is precious, but there are really some politicians whose souls I believe are so black and whose conscience are so callous for them to easily take someone’s life. I am afraid that this will never stop and I am petrified that my children, my children’s children and the future generations will also experience this kind of culture. Some people especially those who are very poor are afraid to go against their officials because they might end up dead. There are some politicians who believe that they are so powerful that with their money, they can hire killers to eliminate their opponents.

Vote-buying is a thing as well now. What are these politicians thinking? Is it for the glory of gold and power? So many questions yet unanswered. Politicians who believe that they are so high and mighty and who are not afraid to murder people for their political ambitions must remember that karma is real and that nature has its sense of justice.

Clean, peaceful, and honest elections are everybody’s dreams. A brighter future for the next generations is what we always wish for. Hopefully, this coming election the guns, goons and gold are replaced by prayer, honesty and integrity.

When the time comes and you will be facing the final judgment it is not how many weapons you own, how many body guards you hire or how many treasures you keep but rather what you have done in the eyes of God.

So for these politicians who believe that they are invincible, time will come that what they had done will definitely go back to them.

Let us make this election fair and square and let us have the freedom to vote without fear and mental reservations.
