Chacapna: Amangyen, Bautista etc.: Pro-teacher politicians’ epilogue

SOMEONE told me that copies of this paper last Saturday have been bought by the bulk as reported by newsstand sellers in Baguio. Limited or no copies also were in Bontoc, the capital of Mt. Province.

Unusual it seems, so I guess the people of Mt. Province have not read what I wrote about Avelino C. Amangyen – the incumbent mayor in the municipality of Paracelis, now gunning the congress seat for the lone district. So, rewriting it again in a “KISS” format, Keep It Simply Short, will justify me.

Amangyen’s scintillating platform aside from the traditional farm to market roads is to tap the raw rivers of the province for mini hydrothermal projects, both supplying electricity and water to the farmers. Unlike the bigger dams that are not environmentally friendly, mini hydro are favorable, as it returns water supply immediately to the rivers.

Potentials of each municipalities will be supported like bio products, solar and gas resources that are untapped and tourism in the west will be sustained. Irrigations which, until now are the needed projects especially in the municipality of Bauko and the continuous importation of vegetables unfavorable to the farmers will be addressed.

To do these, senior high students in various curriculums should much the potentials in the municipalities. Again, what is more unusual about Eastern politicians is the fact that one seldom, finds any millionaire.

What eastern politicians receive are distributed back to the people. No mansions, no expensive cars and no lavish outfits. Your presence and help regardless of the amount in times of need is the living tradition. That’s how you will see Avelino C. Amangyen in Congress, if he wins.

In Baguio City, Peter Rey Bautista, scion of educators in the city and co-owner of the University of Baguio, is giving his shot for a congress seat in the lone district. I doubt if Peter Rey is aiming for the pork barrel share. He already has much resources. A fat cat cannot be fattened. Pure public service, I presume is what Peter Rey wants. No other rewarding endeavor can one have than to devout time and resources to serving the public.

So what scintillating platform will Peter Rey push, if other than sustaining Baguio City as the educational center of the North amidst the fast growing infrastructure jungle the city experiences. Traffic woes and tourism spill is nothing new as he was a former mayor of the city.

Perhaps he is thinking of other ways to sustain the glory of the city, once he is in congress.

In Benguet, what I can remember about Nestor B. Fongwan, now running for congressman was the time when he was still mayor of La Trinidad. I was borrowing this seed money for my agricultural project when I received a “not so unpleasant to hear” advice from him regarding the use of the money for agricultural project.

In the end, he approved that loan. Well, sometimes that’s how you act as a leader. You scold, reprimand sometimes tongue lash, but after that, you give the man what he needs.

Don’t forget too some running councilors in Baguio who at times were friendly to the teaching profession. Benny Bomogao is the valedictorian followed by Fred Bagbagen, Vladimir Cayabas and Ruben Coteng.
