Llavor-Deita: A witty Booba

ETHEL Gabison alias Ethel Booba is a Filipino comedienne and author. She is known with her sexy style in acting and singing and most of all her style in posting her tweets or writing her books. Recently, her tweet in 2018 regarding senatorial candidates who are running now in 2019 resurfaced in social media. In one of her tweets, Booba mentioned that a certain senatorial candidate should get an NBI clearance. Another was to let this other senatorial candidate enjoy his retirement as a “businessman” since he is nearing a century old. The last one was about a senator’s brother who wants to run again, Booba suggested not to let the other brother as he was still on bail. You know what, Ethel Booba made sense with all her comments.

Yes, Booba has a point. Even though her tweets or posts in social media were just for fun yet still it makes people think twice. Just look at this situation for instance, an ordinary citizen has difficulties of securing the NBI clearance. There are even times that we cannot easily get our clearance due to the “hit” mark stamped in our paper and we have to wait for the clearing of our names. Just like in the case of my brother who has four names, a difficult to spell middle name and a family name, so every time he applies for his NBI clearance he has to wait for weeks because the hit mark is always seen on his record. Janitors, office personnel and even OFWs cannot be hired immediately because the requirement seek for an NBI clearance and age limit.

It seems that we have doubts and fears of hiring unknown persons but it is easy to forgive and forget those bigwigs who had numerous cases. Even people who want to join in some raffle draws; they cannot join the said contest if they are affiliated with the organizers. Yet there are politicians who were already accused of plunder, graft and corruption but still they are allowed to run for office without any difficulty.

Yes, we know that the major requirement to run for public office is Filipino citizen, and knows how to read and write. If this is the case then even those who were accused of stealing from the government can freely run into office. I think it is about time we have to change our constitution particularly in the qualifications of the candidates who seek positions in the government.

People should also think of those political candidates who either had served our country well or those who had created anomalies. We cannot just vote for someone based on how well they dance or sing on stage. We cannot just vote for someone because the person is affiliated with another politician. People should dissect the integrity and honesty of each candidate.

Ethel Booba may not be at par when it comes to educational achievements of our politicians. She may not have graduated with flying colors in some Ivy League universities; however, she is able to say words that are worth discerning for. I am not judging these politicians who want to serve the Filipinos because they have their right to run as public officials. I just hope that the people should be able to scrutinize the candidates well because after all the future of our country lies not only in the hands of the politicians but also on the people who placed them in their positions.
