THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Western Visayas with LTO-Bacolod City and Negros Occidental, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Department of Education, Department of Health, transport groups, jeepneys, motorcycle riders and big bikers, taxis, buses and TNVS accredited vehicles, among others, staged a caravan on the road safety campaign, which is now the direction of the LTO nationwide.

LTO-Western Visayas Director Rolando Ramos, with LTO Bacolod officer-in-charge and LTO Negros Occidental head of the Provincial Enforcement Team Renato Novero, led the caravan along the main streets of Bacolod. The caravan kicked off at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, at the Bacolod Government Center and ended at SM Bacolod.

Ramos said this is the take-off of the country's celebration of a nationwide road safety advocacy.

"This calls for partnership among the stakeholders that aims to prevent road crashes and promote road safety," he said.

Based on records, 28 road accidents occur every day.

"If we can minimize it, the better by creating awareness and continued consciousness among the motorists and pedestrians about the importance of road safety," said Ramos.

Road safety can be achieved with the strict observance of road courtesy by motorists. This plays a vital role towards the attainment of safety in the roads and streets.

"We want our drivers to be disciplined because when one is disciplined, road safety is assured. They have to practice what needs to be done with regard to road safety and order. This is a start of the serious awareness for all our drivers initiated by the LTO that aims to instill in their minds what road safety really means and we are serious about this," he said.

LTO holds a pre-licensing activity to new driver-applicants. The activity includes examination, seminars and workshops.

"By being courteous in the streets, we can show respect to each other by giving the road-right of-way. We should not display arrogance in the streets. Our minds should be cool at all times and avoid road races and arguments in the streets," said Ramos.

With regards to traffic rules and regulations, drivers should observe speed limit. There are required speed limits to be observed in areas that are inhabited and in school zones. Speed limit on these areas should be strictly observed to avoid accidents.

On open area, Ramos said, one can safely speed their way but still safety should prevail at all times.

Motorcycles are always prone to road crashes, thus, "If possible, let us observe the basic regulations by observing the allowable speed limit. Use or wear the needed safety gears that are required of the motorcycle riders."

"Use your standard protective helmet and protective gears especially if you are traversing on a long highway and observe speed limit at all times. Of all the motor vehicles that are running in our roads and streets, they are all under the regulation of the Land Transportation Office," said Ramos.

"As an authority, we are the implementers of the law with regard to traffic rules and regulation and we want to send a message and this is the beginning of our awareness and we are serious about this drive and this will be sustained as regards the achievement of road safety," he added.
