Vicente: Fathoming sports passion

TRAINING and competing are two of the many aspects that are involved in sports.

But what is evident in every aspect is the attitude and character which are considered to be the highlights of sports where one can decipher or perceive the challenges, problems and projections. It gives you the option of what must be done and or what should be improved.

Emotional state and preparation of our athletes here in the Philippines should be taken to consideration in order to address problems and find solutions because amidst the physical prowess, emotional breakdowns leave Filipino athletes helpless and alone.

Many studies have been made and many possible solutions have been recommended to address the athlete’s emotional state.

Studies on “Mental Toughness” and “Psychological Skills Training” are showing promise but are not getting too much attention. Athletes’ emotional fortitude remains taboo and not taken seriously, leaving performance to just physical training less the honing of emotional foundation to endure the rigors of training, losing and even winning.

Statistical records they say is not on its alarming stage, breakdowns after losing or winning and even training collapses are isolated cases as per assessment but occurrences are consistent in every sport, in every competition and in every training.

So, when would they act? Those who should act? When will they have the concern? Is there a need for statistical increase in records? Is it not better to act now?

I still believe that one of the strongholds of a country is their athletes who represent it, the wrong treatment of leaders on their athletes becomes a mirror of their insensitivity, their selfishness and their character as a person and as an incapable leader.
