Davao police nab 183 for violating gun ban

THE Police Regional Office (PRO)-Davao arrested a total of 183 violators of the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) gun ban from January 13 to May 13.

Based on the data provided by PRO-Davao spokesperson Jason Baria, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) recorded the highest number of apprehensions with 51.

It was followed by Davao del Norte Police Provincial Office (DNPPO) with 41, Compostela Valley Provincial Police Office (37), Davao Oriental Provincial Police Office (30), Davao del Sur Provincial Police Office (21), and Davao Occidental Provincial Police Office (3).

Police in the region also confiscated a total of 69 pistols, 47 revolvers, 16 rifles, nine shotguns, and 62 units of sumpak or improvised/homemade firearms during the four months of operation.

Records also showed that there are total of 318 firearms surrendered or deposited in the nearest police stations for safekeeping. These are composed of 228 pistols, 24 revolvers, 24 rifles, and 42 shotguns.

Under Section 32, of the Republic Act (RA) 7166 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, no person shall bear firearms in public places, including any building, street, park, private vehicles, public conveyance, even if licensed to possess or carry the same, unless authorized in writing by the Comelec.

Violators, meanwhile, are now facing charges. They were arrested either through a series of implementation of search warrants, checkpoint operations, drug busts, and police response.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is mandated to implement the nationwide gun ban through the conduct of checkpoints, which is part of security measures during the election period.

The election period started on January 13 and will last until June 12.

Meanwhile, the PRO-Davao only recorded a single election-related violent incident in the region after the brother of incumbent Mayor Rhodora Alcoran of New Corella, identified as Rogelio Serrano Jr., 44, was shot dead on May 7 by unidentified gunmen in Purok 4, Barangay Poblacion, New Corella, Davao del Norte.

The victim was the Administrative Aide 1 in the municipality of New Corella.
