Casas-Tumuran: Unli-rice BBQ meal at Grill House

IT WAS a Friday and my husband was off duty so we decided to have dinner somewhere and spend quality time with our daughter. We were both craving for some BBQ.

So I told him we would try this new place to dine in Mintal, Davao City named Grill House by Mommy and Bobby. We did not have a hard time locating it because it is just across Gevin Pawnshop (exact address is Sampaguita St, along Davao-Bukidnon Road, Brgy. Mintal, Tugbok District, Davao City.)

From the outside, you can see the crew preparing the pork and chicken skewered on sticks then cook over a charcoal grill. At quick glance, you would think they are only for take-out orders. But as you pay at the cashier, you would see the wide space with more than 10 tables and chairs inside for customers who wish to dine-in.

The place has Asian vibes with hanging Japanese accessories (maybe because Mintal is known as Little Tokyo) and scenic wallpaper views. The place is big and can accommodate 50 to 80 guests. They have two water sinks near the cashier so the customers can enjoy eating with their hands.

The menu is at the cashier’s area, just near the entrance. They have pork BBQ and chicken BBQ (pecho or paa) — you can choose between regular meal (P55 and P80, respectively) and the unli-rice meal (P63 and P88, respectively.) They also have tuna panga (600 grams for P350 only.) We tried one of each kind.

The pork BBQ meal is served in three pieces of skewered pork and a rice. My husband is happy because the pork barbecue has the consistency of the sweet red sauce. The texture is soft and we did not have a hard time feeding it to Yanna as well.

The marinade for chicken BBQ has been infused and absorbed properly making it delectable even without dipping into your own toyomansi combo.

The pork and chicken BBQ had me with the glaze which I can tell that the meat is slathered with consistent barbecue sauce while grilling.

The tuna panga is something that you would want to order again and take out even after consuming the whole part of it. They serve it in a silver tray and you can see the special sauce being slathered over.

Good thing they have their unli-rice meal option and you can ask for more if you want to savor every bite of the meat.

If we had this one popular BBQ restaurant where customers would just clap if they want more rice, the Grill House has another strategy - each customer with unli-rice order will have a bell. Yes, a bell. So if you are still craving for more, just ring that bell and the friendly crew will serve you quick.

On the side, pomelo and artisan dark chocolates are available for desserts. The chocolates (P35 each) are baked by no less than the owner, Chef Pollyana Galvez of Mommy and Bobby.

I also found some Arabica coffee pouches and bottles which are available at P150 and P110 each, respectively.

For me, I give a score of 4 out 5 for Grill House by Mommy and Bobby. The one point is reserved because there are areas that need to be improved like adding at least two to three crew members to easily accommodate all customers who need extra rice.

They are also open for reservation, call them at 0905-487-5739.
