Talisay’s Abarquez wins Governor’s Cup MVP

KENDRICK Abarquez of the two-time champion Talisay City Aquastars bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title in the recently concluded 3rd Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament.

Joining Abarquez in the Mythical 5 were teammates Keaton Clyde Taburnal and Clark Louis Ruedas. Others who made it were Gabriel George Cometa of Mandaue City Ballers and Albert John Sacayan of Balamban Shipbuilders.

Abarquez received a P10,000 cash prize for bagging the highest individual award, while the members of the Mythical 5 got P5,000 each, courtesy of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) and the Cebu Provincial Government.

Abarquez, Taburnal and Ruedas were vital cogs in Talisay City’s quest for another title this season.

The Aquastars won back-to-back titles after defeating Mandaue City, 74-69, in Game 3 of their best-of-three championship series at the University of San Carlos gym last May 11.

The University of the Visayas guard Cometa, meanwhile, led Mandaue City all season. He had a notable performance in Game 2 when he had 23 points and 16 assists to force a winner-take-all Game 3.

Sacayan was the top performer for the season’s surprise team, Balamban. The Shipbuilders bagged third place after beating 2017 champion Minglanilla Archangels, 77-71.

The champion team Talisay City won P500,000; Mandaue City, P300,000; Balamban, P200,000; and Minglanilla, P100,000.

The province-wide basketball tournament was organized by the CPSC and the Cebu Provincial Government for grassroots players aged 21 years old and below. (RSC)
