Deita: Mass Communication or miscommunication

THE midterm election was a peaceful one except for some isolated cases in some areas and the glitches of the vote counting machines.

In social media, the heat of the elections is still on. Comments flood especially from those who are so engrossed with the results. The hype of the elections are still high to the point that some are already posting negative remarks on politicians who are not favorable to them. People rant in social media.

I have my shares of rants too. Where did we go wrong? How come there was none from the Otso Diretso candidates in the magic 12? How come this certain actor-turned-politician despite of the bashing in social media is still part of the magic 12 in the partial and unofficial results of the Comelec?

As I was scanning the posts made by my friends in Facebook and Instagram, I realized that not all voters are into social media. There are more poor Filipinos who are not computer savvy. We kept on campaigning to vote or not to vote certain candidates in social media yet we tend to forget that there are still millions of Filipinos who do not have access to internet.

Many ballots were rejected by the VCM because only few people knew that they have to make sure that their ballots have no extra markings and no over voting of candidates.

In the latest report, there were more than one million voters who over voted. The information regarding the “Dos and Don’ts” during voting should have been disseminated widely in every nook and corner of the Philippines and not just on mass and social media. Being in the third world country is not an excuse to allow the Filipinos to be ignorant in casting their votes.

Aside from information dissemination during elections, people now in social media are lambasting politicians who are in the magic 12. People are showing their shock when none from the Otso Diretso candidates made it. Now, where did their political strategists go wrong? The midterm election showed that there is really a need to communicate properly not only in social media but also in mass media and some other means that can reach out to those who are not into technology.

Let us take Bong Revilla’s case for example, people are angry why he made it to the magic 12. But the people only assumed that everybody knew about his graft cases as it can be seen in social media. However, did everyone really know? How about the credentials of the other candidates like the Otso Diretso team? Do people know?

There are so many honest and hardworking candidates in the Otso Diretso team that could somehow topple the Duterte’s administration. However, lack of communication or should I say miscommunication was a factor on why these wonderful candidates did not make it and why those who won despite having many issues are now secured of a seat in the senate.
