DABAWENYOS who rushed to avail themselves of a cellphone units' sale offered by a mobile phone store inside a mall on Friday morning, May 17, went home disappointed after the management decided to cancel it.

8telcom Mobile Solutions, a cellphone store, located at the second floor of SM City Davao in Quimpo Boulevard, Matina, Davao City, posted on its official Facebook page at 10:35 a.m. that the management decided to cancel the sale "due to unforeseen issues."

8telcom also said it will close its store the whole day of Friday, May 17, and will post a new scheme for Saturday (May 18) and Sunday (May 19).

"This is for the safety of everyone. We apologize. Thank you," the management said.

In the afternoon, the management issued another statement, saying, "We were not able to serve due to the uncontrolled crowd."

8telcom also said it is working with the SM City Davao management on how to make the sale event successful and orderly the soonest possible.

"We appreciate all the efforts from customers who came from outside of Davao City, rest assured we will have a better event next time," 8telcom added.

Facebook user Odessa Umusig posted a video wherein shoppers can be seen scampering toward the cellphone store when the mall opened around 10 a.m.

Mall goers used both sides of the escalator, which were not functioning at that time, but there was no one reportedly hurt during the incident.

Another Facebook user Lester John Moreño posted photos of the queue of people waiting for the store to open.

Based on the photos, the whole second floor was overly crowded.

8telcom announced it will have a Summer Clearance Sale from May 17 to 19, wherein smartphones, tablets, and other accessories will have up to 80 percent discount.

However, many were shocked and disappointed when the cancellation announcement was made.

Sarah Andres Aterrado posted her frustration on her Facebook account, even calling the promo a "too-good-to-be-true deals."

Aterrado questioned 8telcom's lack of contingency measures despite its online post garnered many comments and shares.

"How come you were not able to come up with a plan on how to handle the situation well? Unforeseen issues? What a poor excuse," she said.

Aterrado also heard other people came as early as 6 a.m. while others took a day off from work.

"Some even came from Cotabato (poor bloke showed me his bus ticket) and other nearby cities and provinces, and they ended up going home empty-handed with no idea what's actually going to happen," she said.

While some netizens sympathized with those who were there during the sale, some questioned their priorities in buying items which are not totally necessary.

"Akala ko ba crisis? Ambot lang sa uban diha basin pag-abot sa basic needs moingon na pud mahal kaayo ang palaliton/taas ang pamasahe / gamay ang sweldo, etc. Ako tawon nagmantiner lang ani akong celfon n70 12 years ago nako napalit usahay mo hang pa gyud tungod cguro sa kadugay na (I thought there is crisis? I don't know, but there are some who would complain about the high prices of basic goods and services and minimum wage. While I still have my n70 phone for 12 years now. It has some defects already since it is already old)," Facebook user Fernando Sofernz ZuniegaSoso commented on SunStar Davao's post.

Miggy Miguel said: "At least pumila sila outside the shop (At least they lined outside the shop). I was expecting people to get trampled on and maybe even breaking the glass of the store. Scary lang the way they all ran up pero pagdating sa taas pumila naman. (The way they all ran up was scary. Good thing they fall in line)."
