MOST schools in Cebu Province still suffer from lack of learning resource materials, according to a Department of Education (DepEd) 7 official.
Those that offer the senior high school program do not enough computers for their students, said Isaiah Wagas, education program supervisor.
He said they have been distributing 40 to 50 computers per school in the province regardless of the number of students who’ll use them.
He admitted that many students use the computers so these break down easily. He said the units cannot be replaced immediately since they have to prioritize schools that don’t have computers yet.
Wagas blamed the delay in the approval of the 2019 budget for the late delivery of other educational materials and the buidling of classrooms.
He said there won’t be enough books to go around so incoming students for the 2019 academic year will have to share.
Construction of additional classrooms is also in its early stages, so schools will have to adopt the double shifting strategy until the new classrooms are completed.
Wagas said close to one million students are expected to go back to school next month, or a 10-percent increase in enrollees. Some 50,000 will be senior high school students.
He said the department’s child finding program has convinced many out-of-school youths to go back to the classrooms.
“Fortunately, many have decided to study,” Wagas said in Cebuano. (JJL)
