Newly elected mayors to get help from DILG

AFTER being proclaimed winners, 51 new and reelected local chief executives in Cebu will have to undergo a general orientation on governance.

In an interview on Monday, May 20, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Cebu Director Jerome Gonzales said the general orientation will help the local leaders with local governance concerns at the start of their term.

“We’re going to divide them into newly minted and reelected local chief executives. They will each have a training track to follow. That is being taken care of by the Local Government Academy (LGA), which is the training arm of the DILG,” he said.

According to Gonzales, the training will help provide town and city mayors in the province a checklist of things they need to accomplish in their first 100 days as local chief executive.

This includes the reconstitution of local special bodies such as the school board, health board and development councils.

Also included are the accreditation of civil society organizations and the crafting of an executive and legislative agenda, among others.

“Before the assumption of office of the new set of elected officials is the formal turnover of government. Given this, we will probably have the general orientation right after that. Bulk of the general orientation will happen after they assume office at noon of June 30, but the LGA will conduct basic orientations before that,” Gonzales said. (RTF)
