Cebuanos all set for boxing series

CEBU’s pugs will be up against unbeaten opponents in their first assignment in the Gerry Pens Promotions and ESPN5’s boxing reality show dubbed as the Ultimate Boxing Series - “Kamaong Pinoy.”

April Jay Abne of Wild Boxing Gym locks horns with Ronel Dela Cruz of Kaamino Stable, while Phil-Aust Stable’s Ian Refuela takes on Welben Montere in the flyweight division.

Meanwhile, Rimon Rama of Phil-Aust Stable trades leathers with MP Davao Boxing’s Lienard Sarcon and Lenjun Retuerto of EG Survival Boxing Camp faces off with Gary Tamayo of Alchemist Multimedia in the bantamweight division.

Abne is one of the most inexperienced in the bunch and just turned pro this year with a first -round stoppage of Marvin Laping. He, however, was a standout in the amateur ranks, winning a gold medal in the PSC Pacquiao Cup last year.

Dela Cruz has seven fights under his belt and is coming off a second-round knockout of Ian Ligutan.

Abne is 1-0 with a knockout, while Dela Cruz is 6-0-1 with four knockouts.

Refuela is on a layoff for almost three years. He last saw action in 2016 with a stoppage win over Belmar Plaza.

Montere, on the other hand, is coming off a unanimous decision win over John Mark Vecino.

Refuela is 3-0 with two knockouts, while Montere is 2-0-1 with a knockout.

In the meantime, Rama is returning from a 19-month hiatus. His last fight was a unanimous decision defeat to Richard Bulacan.

Sarcon won by unanimous decision against Jessie James Boyles last year. Rama is 6-1 with four knockouts, while Sarcon is 4-0 with a knockout.

Meanwhile, Retuerto hasn’t fought for more than two years since a third-round stoppage win over Ernie Mino Jr. Tamayo is fresh from a second-round stoppage over Gebby Manago.

Retuerto is 4-0 with four knockouts, while Tamayo is 2-0 with two knockouts.

The first round of the tournament will be on May 23 in Novaliches.

Both the flyweight and bantamweight finals will be featured in huge GerryPens Promotions promoted fight card headlined by an International Boxing Organization flyweight bout between Carlo Peñalosa and Mexican Maximino Flores. (EKA)
