Cagayan de Oro City police chief up for recovery

THE head of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) is advised to stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Polymedic Plaza after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle crash, Wednesday afternoon, May 22.

Cocpo police director Colonel Nelson Aganon was rushed to the hospital after a tragic turn of event while participating in a motorcycle-riding course at Camp Evangelista, in Patag.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Surki Sereñas, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Northern Mindanao, said Aganon sustained severe head trauma and had to undergo surgery, after the motorcycle Aganon was riding took a nosedive while performing a motorcycle jump practice.

“Naa siya’y protective gear pero accident lang gyud ang nahitabo (he wore protective gear and what happened was an accident),” Sereñas said.

Aganon is among 70 police officers in the region who participated the PNP-sponsored Motorcycle Riding Course (MCRC). It is supervised by the Highway Patrol Group (HPG).

The final jump of the 45-day training was supposed to be held on Thursday, but it was cancelled due to the accident. The graduation is slated on May 31.

Sereñas said that the MCRC is meant to train the police on how to drive motorcycles with safety. He said the training was only good for 45 days, but because of different activities like the election season and Holy Week, it took three months to complete.

“We pray for his complete recovery and wish him well for him to continue his good plans for Cagayan de Oro City,” he added.

Sereñas’ counterpart in Cocpo Lieutenant Colonel Mardy Hortillosa II said Lieutenant Colonel Dexter Paje, Cocpo’s deputy director for administration, will temporarily take charge until the regional director installs someone to act as officer-in-charge.

“(It’s) automatic (that the) deputy for admin and mag take charge until such time nga ang (that the) regional director mag (will) order nga magbutang og (to put an) OIC (Officer in Charge),” he said. (Alwen Saliring)
