HONEY Grace Buenafe of Jose Maria College (JMC) annexed two gold medals to lead Davao region's total medal haul of five golds, four silvers and four bronzes, as the National Prisaa Games 2019 chess competition closed at the Sofia Hall of Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP), Barangay 76-A in Matina, Davao City Thursday, May 23.
Second seeded Buenafe topped the women's individual event after tallying six points in the seven-round Swiss System format chessfest, while Kristel Herrera (5.5) of Western Visayas and Jersy Aure Ariola (5.0) of Calabarzon bagged the silver and bronze, respectively.
Buenafe also led Davao's golden finish in women's chess team competition with 20 points over Western Visayas (17.5) and Calabarzon (17) who settled for the next two places. Davao was also composed of Zsuzsa Grace Tabudlong, Frince Ezra Ocliasa, Queenie Galinada and Kristel Herrera.
Meanwhile, Central Visayas ruled the college men's team event over Davao's Andre Miguel Batucan, Jasper Erum and Daniel Rome Borinaga who settled for the silver.
Irish Yngayo, Charlene Moulic, Lorraine Yngayo and Sophia Deliva, for their part, salvaged the junior girls team bronze.
In football, Davao region college men's team annexed the bronze after beating Zamboanga Peninsula, 1-0, behind University of Mindanao's Christian Cabantao's goal at the Davao City-UP Sports Complex. The Davao region team was bannered by UM Tagum, UM Davao and Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC).
Davao's Frederick Canlas was hailed best defender.
The Davao junior boys football team also pocketed a bronze after eking out a 3-0 win over Zamboanga Peninsula in their battle for third.
Organizers thanked the Davao City government for allowing the use of the sports complex football pitch after Tionko field was left unplayable due to heavy rains the past evenings.
Over at the Davao City National High School, Davao lost to Western Visayas in their college men's sepak takraw championship game.
Meanwhile, college men's baseball defending champion Davao region finished fourth after bowing to Northern Mindanao, 5-7, in their battle for third.
