Itogon schools in hazard zones evaluated

WITH the local government unit of Itogon still finding relocation, schools identified within danger zones underwent Hazard Vulnerable Capacity Assessment Training.

On Thursday, May 23, Nerissa Barbosa, division disaster risk reduction and management coordinator of the Department of Education in Benguet, said the training is for schools located in risk clear areas in preparation of the onslaught of rainy season.

Schools include Ucab Elementary School in barangay Ucab, Ampucao Elementary and High School, Loacan, and Goldfield.

Students are expected to return to schools June 3.

She said in case of consecutive rains, one immediate response is to suspend classes and limit enrollees.

Another strategy made after Typhoon Ompong is the conduct of half-day classes to limit the number of pupils and not to utilize classrooms that were earlier condemned.

Itogon was among the hard hit by Typhoon Ompong in September of 2018, with more than 100 casualties buried in a landslide.
