IN AN era when women are working and are always on-the-go, applying heavy make-up is a hassle. Especially with summer going on, one would prefer tints than heavy, creamy, matte lipsticks. The trend indeed is achieving a natural look.

The demand of the market becomes the reason for the growing number of brands that promised a natural look to consumers. In Davao City, Shiro Whitening Collection and Beautint Cosmetics by RJ Pharmaceutical Laboratory is one of the most trusted local brands.

"Our products are all made from natural and organic ingredients so we don't just promise our clients the natural look they deserve but also the proper skin care," RJ Pharmaceutical Laboratory owner Ramon Joan Lumbatan, 31, said.

As a nurse, Lumbatan said she is conscious about what she put on her face and lips. So instead of buying, she decided to make her own beauty products. Fortunately, she grew up seeing her parents running a pharmaceutical laboratory producing astringents and other beauty products. It seems like being in the beauty industry has been in their bloodline after all.

"I grew up exposed in a laboratory of astringents. I noticed that as time goes by, the world is changing. The demand is changing. We are in a world now where most people have become so conscious about the quality of a beauty product. Actually, people, including myself, look for organic beauty products. The price only comes second," Lumbatan said.

It was in 2017 when she first made public her water-based pigmented lip and cheek tints called Beautint that is available in10 shades, namely, perky pink, lux burgundy, brick red, pucker red, bloody red, merlot, crimson red, scarlet red, hot fuchsia, and sexy plum. Surprisingly, the product becomes popular, mostly to the millennial, young moms, and working women. The tint only cost P120 each and P75 each for 20 pieces.

The next year, Lumbatan launched her skincare line called Shiro, composed of whitening soap, whitening lotion, whitening body serum, tinted sunscreen, activated charcoal mudpack, clay mask, facial foam, exfoliating toner, and rejuvenating toner.

"Our products are very affordable but it could surely compete with the quality of mainstreamed international products," she said.

The products could be bought in a set such as the Body Whitening Set (two whitening soap, instant whitening lotion, and body serum) for only P700. For resellers, the set is only P510 and P430 for distributors nationwide.

Last two weeks ago, Lumabatan finally opened a kiosk at the second floor of Gaisano Mall of Davao. She said she is planning for more stalls in a different location and an office in Marfori St. for easy access of her clients. And as the business grew, she is still exploring other more beauty products that are all natural and organic.

"Starting up a business was never easy but if you really want it and you know in your heart that it is your passion, I think it will all be worth it in the end. The challenges will always be there, the competition is tight and rejections may disappoint us, but always believe in your products and your dreams," she said.
