Quibranza: Summer is over—now what?

A FEW gigs here and there; several shows happening all over the metropolis. A couple of restobars had bands come over to play; fierce and fun, with only photographs uploaded as evidence of a night of beers and the elusive fountain of youth making a rare appearance. Everyone drank responsibly on those nights. The beers were nice, too.

Malls also played their part joining in on the fun. Aside from the annual sale promos, creative workshops and pocket concerts were also the zest of Summer 2019. Children, much to the unabated prodding of their parents, did not regret learning a new thing or two from capable mentors. Artists, who have had their fair share of playing every stage this small but feisty city is capable of setting up hot night after hot night, couldn’t have been happier.

As it is also National Heritage Month, arts and culture was also part of the party. Painting exhibits were set up and tours to the city’s museums and heritage sites were organized. This much to say, May was pretty eventful.

And with this, the second hand seems to move every bit slower and slower. Every tick and tock, growing louder and louder. It’s not that we have been granted more time. We’re just realizing now how much time we actually have left.

And the recent morning rains don’t help either. Every pit and patter bouncing off the concrete, add to that final, extended, indulgent drum roll signaling to everyone that the end is coming soon.

“Summer is over,” everyone anticipates. “Now what?”

The clocks and clouds don’t end. And then suddenly, the latter leaves the former hanging high and dry.

Ticktock. June’s just around the corner: A new season begins.

While it’s been a few years now, but the effects of the country shifting to the K to 12 Program has not been as prominently felt as it is today, at least from a social perspective. Heck, even commercialism is confused. “So... ‘Back to School’ is exactly when again?”

However, and thank heavens, we have the NBA Finals to look up to for mid-year stability. Not much has changed really. The Golden State Warriors are back for the fifth time in a row and are showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Well now actually, come to think of it, some things have changed. This Warriors team is just half of a telling tale. Drake’s Toronto Raptors, the only team in the NBA that’s not based in the United States (maybe the excuse why American sportscasters refer to winning the ‘NBA Championship’ as winning the ‘World Championship’—a habit that annually irks sports pundits from the other six continents), is competing for the NB—er, World Championship. News flash: It’s Toronto’s first-ever Finals appearance in its 24 years in the league.

In the Philippines, and only after highly charged telenovelas with a lot of slapping, crying and amnesia, the game of basketball is a primetime demigod.

With all the trash talk lately, it would be interesting to see if Filipinos do go out rooting for Canada this year. One thing’s for sure, a betting man will look to bet on the team who’s up by garbage time.

Ah, summer. See you next year.
