‘What makes a great burger?’ Celebrating International Burger Day

JUST like the sea creatures in Bikini Bottom (“Spongebob Squarepants”), people from all around the world just love their hamburgers. Though this quick fix used to be the epitome of fast food—cheap and fast—it has evolved into something more. Whether the affordable types or gourmet creations, every shop, diner or restaurant has its different version of a hamburger, aiming to make the best one ever.

But what really makes a great burger? Is it the juicy beef patty? Is it the bun? Or is it the secret formula that Plankton tries so hard to steal from Mr. Krabs (Spongebob reference!)? Celebrating #InternationalHamburgerDay today, here are some of our readers’ thoughts on what makes a great burger.

“First off, the buns have to be grilled. Second thing I look forward to, and most important, would be an impressive patty. It shouldn’t be overcooked. It must be greatly seasoned and it has to be juicy! The regular ingredients have to be present: lettuce, tomato, onions, bacon and mushroom (sorry, but I’m not a fan of pickles). Great sauce too, serves as a welcome complement. But one thing I cannot miss in my burger is cheese. Plus, that yummy burger juice dripping down my hand? Perfect! That’s what I consider a great burger.” — Hanah Sala, financial advisor

“A burger is defined by its patty! Great burgers should be juicy and flavorful that it will complement the vegetables pressed in between the buns.” — Axlle Justine K. Jakosalem, project coordinator

“A great burger is made up of the tastiest burger patty, and the manner it was cooked whether grilled, fried, or baked, alongside with the condiments including mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, pickles.” — Alex Aquino, marketing head

“For me, a great burger starts with the basics: good meat, buns, cheese, garnish and sauce. I don’t need an over-the-top burger. That is just a plus for me. As long as the main ingredients are of great quality—I’d eat it again and again!” — Issa Perez-Gandionco, content creator

“Although the patty is the king or the main ingredient that makes a great burger, the buns are a dealbreaker for me. Moderately seasoned fresh patties plus, soft and slightly sweet buns.” — Kurt Fick, creative entrepreneur

“There’s no single way to determine what makes the perfect burger. It’s the cohesiveness between every component. From a soft but not too soft bun, the right fat to meat ratio to the crisp lettuce, and that ripe, seasoned slice of tomato. Don’t forget the cheese!” — Jed Galang, company president

“I want the patty to stand out for my burgers like the “50/50 burger.” Half ground bacon and half ground beef; the perfect balance of fatty and dense. Also, I appreciate a good in-house burger bun that doesn’t get soggy. All that, plus a little jalapeño, makes for a great burger, in my opinion.” — Charmaine O. de Leon, architect
