Zamboanga City joins national flag day observance

ZAMBOANGA City will join the nation in the observance on Tuesday, May 28, of the 121st National Flag Day.

City Administrator Marie Angelique Go said that a flag raising ceremony will be held at 7 a.m. Tuesday at Plaza Rizal to officially kick off the local celebration of the National Flag Day.

Go said the flag raising ceremony will be spearheaded by the Knights of Columbus in coordination with the city government.

Go said the observance will serve as an encouragement for residents to exercise patriotism and love for country.

She said the national flag day will be celebrated all throughout the country on Tuesday, May 28, through various activities that raise awareness about patriotism.

The national flag day commemorates the day the Philippine flag was first raised after the victory in the Battle of Alapan in 1898, wherein Filipino revolutionaries led by General Emilio Aguinaldo defeated Spanish troops to recapture the province of Cavite.

The commemoration of the national flag day was further extended with Executive Order 173, signed by former President Fidel Ramos, which set the observance from May 28 to June 12. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
