DAVAO City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang urges the next City Council to prioritize re-routing scheme to address traffic problem.

Dayanghirang, who currently chairs the committee on finance, ways and means, said his colleagues should push for a new traffic ordinance for the re-routing.

"We have a lot of bypass roads open by the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways). That is why we are looking into the re-routing scheme of the city," he said on Monday during the Kapehan sa Dabaw press conference at SM City Davao.

The bypass road project, under the supervision of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is targeted to be completed by 2021.

For the meantime, the re-elected councilor is also calling all private subdivisions to allow their areas to be passable.

“We are calling all private subdivisions, as a matter of social concern, to open their gates to be used as another passage by vehicles to alleviate the problem of traffic," Dayanghirang said.

Heavy traffic is mostly observed nowadays especially in the downtown areas due to the ongoing Underground Electrical Distribution System (UEDS) of the Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) that aims to eliminate unsightly electric and telecommunication cables on the city streets, an eyesore for more than half a century.

Dayanghirang also said the council will also coordinate with the executive department in pushing for the creation of a new bus terminal, the North and South bound terminal.

He said it is targeted to be open in Toril and Panancan.

Although he admitted it would add slight inconvenience to passengers who would have to take additional routes before getting to the terminals.

The current Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT) located in Candelaria Street, with a current 650 to 750 bus trips catering to more than 35,000 to 40,000 passenger rides, is deemed overly congested.

"It's not sustainable anymore due to rapid number of vehicles and increase of population," Dayanghirang said.

The 18th City Council will have its last session on June 25 this year.

Dayanghirang also said the next City Council will discuss on the committee appointment.
