3 dead, another hurt in Gitagum road mishap

THREE persons died, including a 14-year-old boy, while another was badly injured after the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a ten-wheeler truck along the national highway of Gitagum, Misamis Oriental Monday night, May 27.

Police identified the fatalities as Jecris Jamis, 22; John Carl Maagad, 22; and Filsant Tagarda, 14, while Clint Ivan Tagarda, 18, is still in the hospital.

The backriders are all residents of Matangad, Gitagum town.

Initial investigation disclosed the victims were on board a Honda motorcycle driven by Jamis when they bumped into a ten-wheeler truck driven by Edesio Cabusas, of Lanao del Norte, around 10:22 p.m.

Both vehicles were said to be heading toward the same direction.

Investigators said the truck was parked on the outer lane of the four-lane highway to check the wiring of the clearance light while the hazard light was on.

Suddenly, the motorcycle allegedly hit the truck's back corner in the left side.

The motorcycle driver and the 14-year-old boy were pronounced dead on arrival at the Owwa Alubijid District Hospital and Polymedic Medical Plaza, respectively.

Police said Maagad died around 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, while at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while Clint Tagarda remains at the hospital.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Princess Joy Velarde, spokesperson of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office, said the truck driver is now under police custody and may likely face charges.

"Depende kung mag file ang family ng kaso or i-settle. Pero if ever, reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide ang kaso," Velarde said.
