CCCI, City Hall agree to promote urban forestry

A PROGRAM that aims to make the city’s streets “green” and promote urban forestry is one of the new advocacies of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).

The chamber formally launched the Participatory Urban Greening Project (PUGP) last Dec. 11, 2009, during its general membership meeting and fellowship held at Parklane Hotel, Cebu City.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña signed the agreement with CCCI, with Councilor Nestor Archival of the environment, parks and playgrounds committee as witness. An earlier memorandum of undertaking was signed by Cebu City Agriculturist Joey Baclayon and Dr. Isabelo Montejo of the Department of Natural Resources.

Large fiberglass garden jars with ficus plants will be installed outside the Gaisano Main and Gaisano Metro Department Stores on Colon St. as part of the program. Deco Sales Inc. on Imus St. will also put five garden jars outside its outlet. Avila Architects expressed their interest to implement the project in their business establishments, the CCCI said in a press statement.

The PUGP is intended to educate the public, vendors and business owners about urban forestry and landscaping; enhance the city’s streets for tourism development; and c) support government in its campaign for a safe and clean environment.
