TAKE part in building a better nation.

This was the message of Edmun Liu, the chief executive officer of Oakridge Realty Development Corp. in Mandaue City, to his employees and tenants during their observance of the National Flag Day Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Liu led more than 300 persons in singing the national anthem while the company’s security personnel were raising the flag. They later recited the pledge of allegiance to the Philippine flag and waved their flaglets while looking skyward.

Liu said his group decided to pay tribute to the heroes who fought for the country’s freedom because they want to continue their legacy.

“It is worthwhile for all of us to think where we all started,” he said.

Liu, in his speech, encouraged the attendees of the event to do their part for the betterment of the country.

He said the little things like picking up one’s trash, planting a tree and following the laws are already a big contribution to the nation.

“Perhaps, it is time to stop the criticism. We should do something instead and contribute,” Liu said.

The National Flag Day in the Philippines is celebrated every May 28, the day of the Battle of Alapan in 1898, during which the Filipino revolutionaries led by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo first raised the flag after defeating the troops of the Spanish Empire and in Cavite province.

Republic Act 8491 (the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines) mandates the observance of the 15 flag days leading to the Independence Day celebration on June 12.

Aside from Oakridge, 13 business establishments in Cebu also participated in the National Flag Day.

Liu said the celebration is a push for unity among Filipinos.

“The Philippines is more than just islands or territories, or buildings or structures. The Philippines is the Filipinos, you and I,” Liu said. (JJL)
