ALTHOUGH exposed to a different culture, children of Cordillerans born in Barcelona, Spain are very much aware of their own tribal roots.
This is through the efforts of Bibaak Barcelona founded in 2009 by Gil Tiban Catimo who is also the present adviser of the group.
The organization has been actively involved in promoting and preserving their unique culture in Barcelona by organizing activities and sharing it to the Filipino Community through cultural presentations.
This was also evident during their 10th year anniversary which was celebrated lately with the theme "Inculcating Love and Harmony Through Our Cultural Heritage.”
“Our goal as Igorot organization is to promote Igorotness and preserve our cultural heritage and past it to our next generation specially to our children born here in Barcelona,” Catimo said.
The celebration was attended and supported by Cordillerans in the United Kingdom headed by Benguet Federation UK Adviser Archie Nabus with his wife Grace, BIBAAK Madrid Spain headed by Josephine Segundo, Igorot groups in Andorra, Switzerland, and their Filipino friends based in Barcelona like the Timpuyog ti Ilocano Association.
“Our other aim is to be organized as Cordillerans so we will be able to help each other in times of difficulty such as helping in the orientation of the newly arrived kailians and death of members or relatives,” Catimo added.
BIBAAK Barcelona is also ready to give a helping hand to their kailians in their home country by giving donations during times of calamities which they have been doing in the past.
Some of the highlights of the group’s anniversary celebration was the presentation of the Bendian dance and the Balangbang dance which enjoined the members and visitors to participate.
If there is one thing that makes us unique from the others, it is our very own culture. BIBAAK Barcelona’s determination in sharing the importance of embracing their cultural heritage to the youth and promoting it abroad is laudable.
