GLOBAL plastic pollution is real and it’s getting worse, hence, the need for measures – big or small – to restore the environment.
For instance, millions of plastic, non-biodegradable straws are used every day worldwide. This has led to a global movement pushed by many groups to lessen plastic wastes – using reusable bamboo straws, an eco-friendly alternative to plastic that can be used with any beverage.
In Davao City, one of the operating tourism establishments that is advocating for bamboo straws is Malagos Garden Resort.
Ira Sisa Aparra, the resort’s Public Relations & Social Media Officer said they launched this campaign as the resort is geared towards practicing sustainable tourism.
For every purchase of the resort’s fruit shake or its Malagos Chocolate Freeze, customers will receive a free reusable bamboo straw. This promo was launched just this summer of 2019.
“One of the major steps that the resort is doing is switching to reusable bamboo straws and saying no to single used plastic,” she said.
The resort sourced the bamboo straws from Bantayan Bamboo Innovation Workshop, a social enterprise in Bantayan Island, Cebu.
“We chose Bantayan Bamboo Innovation Workshop because they provide livelihood in the community of Bantayan Island. So, when you buy any of our shakes and get a free bamboo straw, you do not only help the environment but you are also helping the livelihood of Bantayan Island community to thrive,” Aparra shared.
She emphasized that through the campaign the resort hopes to influence its guests, other companies, and organization to choose the sustainable option in living and providing services.
