CAGAYAN de Oro City Vice Mayor Rainier Joaquin Uy early this week said the city government will extend necessary assistance to city police director Nelson Aganon who is fighting for his life in the hospital after a motorcycle crash on May 22.

Uy said the city council will have to look for available funds to help Aganon.

“Naa’y assistance ihatag pero ato pang tan-awon aha kuhaon kay naa man ta process ana. Hulatan lang nato ang development. The city council is always willing to help,” Uy said.

(There will be an assistance to be given but we will look as to where we are going to get the funds because there’s a process there. We will wait for the development)

He also said the city council is satisfied with the performance and leadership of Aganon.

“Satisfied kaayo ta sa iyang performance kay tan-awon nato ang crime rate nigamay sa iyang pagdumala (We are satisfied with his performance because the crime rates were lowered during his administration),” he added.

But, Uy said while Aganon is still at the hospital, the city council has asked the Police Regional Office (PRO)-Northern Mindanao for a shortlist of qualified police directors to replace Aganon.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Reynante Reyes, Cagayan de Oro City Police Office’s (Cocpo) deputy director for administration, temporarily served as officer-in-charge.

The city’s second top official said the OIC’s function is limited especially in decision making.

Uy said the city council has no personal choice for the replacement. He said they will just wait for PRO-Northern Mindanao to submit a list.

“Ang atong gipadala nga (Our furnished) resolution is for the police higher headquarters to address the directorship of Cocpo,” Uy said.

PRO-Northern Mindanao spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Surki Sereñas said the matter is still being deliberated.

“We are presently deliberating on the matter and we are making sure that it is for the best interest of Kagay-anons,” he said.

“We are also making sure that we supervise the affairs of Cocpo under its OIC and although we recognize the need of a permanent leadership, the urgency can still be manage as of the moment,” he added.
