Zambo mayor orders giving aid for farmers

LOCAL government agencies had been ordered to prioritize aid for local farmers affected by the dry spell brought about by El Niño phenomenon.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar ordered the fast-tracking of local government assistance for the agricultural sector, particularly the provision of rice for farmers and the delivery of farm inputs and seeds during the recent City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council meeting.

Salazar directed the City Social Welfare and Development Office to facilitate the delivery of milled rice for affected farmers and fisherfolk, and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office for the procurement and delivery of seeds and fertilizers by June.

The mayor said that also in the pipeline is the roll-out of the local government's P32 million worth of farm assistance.

The Office of the City Agriculturist reported a total of P9.8 million crop and fishery damage from the weak El Niño as of May 24.

Rice incurred the highest damage with P4 million, followed by commercial plantation crops and assorted vegetables.

The fishery sector suffered a little over P1 million damage. (SunStar Philippines)
