AFTER some delays, the Davao City Skatepark at last opened yesterday, May 31.

Mikey Aportadera, Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge, said all infrastructure details of the recreational park had to be completed.

“We made sure na mahuman tanan artworks will be finished, kini ang nakapadugay. Also ang CR (comfort room), we also check the possibility na ang area basin magbaha (We made sure all the artworks will be finished. This is one that caused the delays. Also the comfort room and we made sure that the area is free from possible flooding),” Aportadera said.

The first skatepark in the city, located under the Agdao Flyover, is finally unveiled to cater all skateboard enthusiasts.

Aportadera also said he hopes the Skatepark will be able to produce Davao City’s future Olympic skateboard champion as it is being considered to be included in the Olympics.

Skatepark manager Lee Roy Guzman said its opening will finally end the longing of the enthusiasts who lobbied for its opening for the past 10 years.

Guzman said scouting for an area was also one factor that caused its delays.

He said the opening of the skatepark will attract more tourists, which could be of help to the city.

The skatepark is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays while minors will be allowed from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. While on weekends, it is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. while minors are allowed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Skateboarders below 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian.
