City schools division ready for classes opening

ALL public elementary and secondary schools are ready for the opening of classes on Monday, June 3, for school year 2019-2020.

This, despite the lack of more than 900 teachers to cope with the increasing student population in local public schools.

Dr. Romy Felix Triambulo, City Schools Division superintendent, said they need about 934 teachers, of which 280 teachers are for kindergarten to Grade 6; 542 for junior high schools and 112 for senior high schools.

Triambulo said that some 223,922 students are expected to troop to public schools on Monday based on the records of early enrollment conducted from January to February, this year.

Of the total enrollees, Triambulo said that 22,610 enrolled in kindergarten; 121,718 in elementary (Grade 1 to 6); 67,916 in Junior High School; and, 11,678 in Senior High School.

He said the number of public school teachers totaled 7,732 only, of which 4,520 for kinder to Grade 6; 2,637 for Grade 7 to 10; and, 576 for Grade 11 to 12.

Based on planning analysis, he said this city would be needing 934 new teachers this year.

He added that last year he had requested for additional teachers but was not granted by the central office.

Triambulo was hoping it will be granted this school year. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
