Press Freedom Week culminates with cheers

THE Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) was declared the overall champion of the First Governor Yevgeny "Bambi" Emano Press Freedom Cup during the closing program of the week-long 37th Press Freedom Week celebration last Friday night, May 31, 2019.

They were followed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Press Corps as first runner-up, Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro (Acdo) Media as second runner-up and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Cagayan de Oro as third runner-up.

The First Governor Bambi Emano Press Freedom Cup started last Tuesday, May 28. It is composed of eight sports events, namely: basketball, volleyball, badminton, dart, chess, fun shoot, bowling, and archery.

The sports event was participated by different media organizations in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro including the COPC, PNP Press Corp, ACDO Media, KBP Cagayan de Oro, Energy Press Corp, Tesda Press Corp, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP)-Cagayan de Oro Chapter, among others.

"Launching the 1st Governor Bambi Emano Press Freedom Cup naa sya'y (there's a) sense of honorship (sic) and the entire media community in Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro will be expecting the second and the third," Uriel Quilinguing, former president of COPC and event organizer of the Press Freedom Week celebration, said.

"In the last three years it appears nga ang (that the) Press Freedom Week is an activity of the Cagayan de Oro Press Club alone. No, it’s not. It’s all the media organizations including Regional Association of Government Communicators. There are people involved in communication, in journalism, that are in the government," Quilinguing said.

"Therefore, they should be involved. It’s not an exclusive, it should be inclusive to all media practitioners. This is not an exclusive activity of the club, mao na ang gusto nako klarohon (that's what I wanted to clear)," he added.
