Renewed CIT-U set for partners cup

VETERAN bench tactician and head coach of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats Edsel Say Vallena wants to test the chemistry of his “newly-formed” team in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partners Cup.

Vallena, a former commercial league coach and current head trainer of the OneonOne Training Camp, will debut as the new WildCats coach on Sunday at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.

“It’s a totally new team, only four of the players from last year were left,” said Vallena, who was appointed as the new head coach for CIT-U just this April. “It’s going to be a learning experience for us.”

In the off-season, Vallena conducted a series of tryouts here and outside of Cebu to find prospects. He got players from Cagayan de Oro City, Davao, Cordova, Masbate and Consolacion.

“This Partners Cup will be a gauge for us. We have yet to play a tune-up game,” he said. “The team has a lot of things to do. If I rate our current situation, I’ll give it a 3 rating for now.” Vallena admitted that they’re still working to sharpen the team’s roster for the Cesafi regular season in August.

The Wildcats will indeed have a tough task on their first game in the Partners Cup, pitted against the reigning champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers on Sunday, June 9.

The Cesafi Partners Cup will officially kick off on Saturday, June 8. The University of Southern-Philippines (USP-F) Panthers will battle the Cebu Landmasters/USC in the first game of the collegiate division.

University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the Southwestern University (SWU-Phinma) Cobras will clash in the next game.

In the high school division, the University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu/Mandaue (UCLM) will debut against USJ-R Baby Jaguars, while ARQ Builders/University of the Visayas Baby Lancers will take on Cebu Elite/USC.

Meanwhile, the ToughGear/SWU-Phinma will battle USP-F Baby Panthers and Hotel Fortuna/University of Cebu Junior Webmasters will play OCCCI/CIT-U Wild Kittens in the high school division on Sunday. (RSC)
