French toasts and milk tea in Wan Chai

WHILE walking the streets of Wan Chai District, Hong Kong around lunchtime, we could not help but notice a queue of people garbed in office wear, some in coat and tie, outside a small café. Round the corner, there was also a line of working professionals in another café with more or less the same exterior with the first one.

We were told that these types of cafes are popular among professionals working in corporate buildings around Wan Chai district. One, because the food is affordable and two, they are very quick to serve and eat which is very ideal for an hour’s worth of office lunch break.

Before we head to the airport to go back home, we stopped by Capitol Café at the ground floor of Kwong Sang Hong Building, 6 Heard Street, Wan Chai. While falling in line waiting for our turn for a vacant seat, we noticed that there were menus and pictures of the food posted outside to ready the queuing customers for what they would like to order. They looked delicious and we were all very excited.

“These places are known for their specialty French toasts and cold milk tea,” shared Emmanuel James Tan from Hong Kong Tourism Board.

It didn’t take us a long time before we could secure a seat for all of us.

We had different orders. Some of us ordered French toasts, scrambled eggs, or the meal package but we did not fail to order their signature iced milk tea. We felt like the experience of dining in a Hong Kong-style street café would not be complete without tasting their milk tea. And it was worth it! Their iced milk tea is really delicious. You can really taste the milk and tea infused together. One does not overpower the taste of the other. This puts to shame the commercial milk tea that we know and often buy in malls.

Tricia from Cebu and I ordered the meal package which looked really yummy when it arrived. It is already complete with toasted bread, pork and beans, hashbrown, bacon, and eggs. It really is a full meal to energize us before our flight back home.

This might look like a breakfast meal to some but people working in Wan Chai district find this a very good, hearty lunch meal.

Aside from these, they also have oatmeals, sandwiches, desserts, hot drinks, and other snacks to choose from.

The next time you find yourselves in Wan Chai, try to find these humble cafés round the corner of the district and indulge on their array of French toast choices among many others.
