Boomerang: “Quintessential” Cebuano Street Food

THERE are only a few things that can tell a place’s story in the same intimacy as food. We have made it our mission to ask around and find the answer to the burning question: What’s the best quintessential Cebuano street food and where can we find it?

“Saang!!!! It’s my all-time favorite street food. I remember allotting around P50 and eating as much as I could after those long stressful days back in college. You can find it in Carbon!”

- Rachel Bardoquillo, 23, Bank Officer

“There are various street foods in different barangays in Cebu City. As a meat lover and a total foodie, living in Cebu for the past seven years, ‘barbecue’ has been one of the most iconic street foods. This smokey Cebuano staple from pork, chicken, beef or seafood is consistently iconic in the street food scene. You can smell the sweet-savory marinade with native sauces on the side. You’ll surely beg for more! My favorite street food is still barbecue. Not only is this mouthwatering cuisine versatile to all occasions, it also has a lot of versions found all over Cebu—Chinese, Korean and Filipino barbecue. If you’re feeling adventurous, this gastronomical dish will not disappoint. You can try isaw (intestines), adidas (chicken feet), heart, liver, batikon/batikulon (gizzard) and betamax (pork or chicken blood). Barbecue restaurants and vendors are found literally everywhere from expensive to cheap barbecue places—it will surely fill your tummy up. Here’s a list of places below to add in your food quest: Matias BBQ at A.S. Fortuna Street, Larsian at Don Mariono Cui Street, The Original AA’s bbq, Yakski’s at Don Mariono Cui Street, and Barbix Barbecue & Grill at E. Zone, F. Cabahug Street.”

- Marielle Jane Golosino, 23, Teacher

“I must say ‘chorizo’. It was 12 years ago during my first visit to Cebu. I went to Bantayan Island and I got curious about the small round-shaped chorizo. I then tried it together with fresh grilled fish. I ordered so much!”

- Dargil Noi Dimatulac, 28, Nurse

“Honestly, just tempura and barbecue on stick. They’ve got a special place in my heart since I’ve been able to have them at any stage of my life at any occasion. No need to go far from home. It’s likely anywhere in the city and in the province.”

- Grant Bacaltos, 25, IT Practitioner
