Convention Center partly opens on Baguio Day

AN INCOMPLETE Baguio Convention Center (BCC) will greet residents on the city’s charter.

Baguio Councilor Mylen Yaranon said parts of the Baguio Convention Center can be used for the September 1 Baguio Day celebration.

“The contractor and DPWH promised that we can celebrate Baguio Day, September 1, 2019 at BCC. Though it doesn’t mean it will be 100 percent done,” Yaranon said.

Yaranon added the convention center is 60 percent done with the main hall already has ceiling and walls installed, wood planks not installed yet, toilet tiles installed.

“They had a meeting last Monday to discuss the coverage of the additional P50M from DPWH,” Yaranon said.

City stakeholders and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have not been seeing eye to eye the past months due to impasses in work and plans implemented for the convention center.

Confusion arose when the DPWH presented revised plans for the BCC signed by the mayor without blessings from neither the technical working group, the City Buildings and Architecture Office and the city council.

The DPWH revised plans have taken out the elevator, escalator and mezzanine, saying structural integrity of the BCC will not allow the additions.

Yaranon said the treasure hunting work by Eliseo Cabusao will be required to submit a certification that the 5 boreholes they made will not affect the structural stability of BCC.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan said both city stakeholders and the DPWH have valid points and see it best a dialog to be in order.

Months ago, city officials sent a letter to Highway Secretary Mark Villar, raising concerns surrounding the BCC rehabilitation.

SunStar Baguio tried to reach DPWH regional director Tiburcio Canlas for updates but failed.
