Countdown to tax deadline starts

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Central Luzon here started Friday its countdown to the April 15 Income Tax Returns (ITR) and payments deadline.

BIR Regional Director Romulo Aguila Jr. said they will hold various programs aimed at encouraging taxpayers to file their ITR for the taxable year 2009 and pay the corresponding taxes early to avoid rush in banks and BIR offices.

The intensified communication campaign to make the people aware of the Income Tax filing season is in line with the bureau's 2010 theme and slogan "Making the Public Know," which aptly is a high visibility communication to all stakeholders of the BIR's tax administration activities and initiatives.

Recently, the bureau's Taxpayer Information and Education Division said all BIR-Authorized Agent Banks (AABs) have been requested to open on two consecutive Saturdays, March 27 (in lieu of April 3 which is Black Saturday) and April 10, 2010.

The AABs were also requested to extend their banking hours up to 5 p.m. for the period April 5 to April 15, 2010 to accept tax returns and payments.

Income Tax is a tax on a person's income, emoluments, profits arising from property, practice of profession, conduct of trade or business or on the pertinent items of gross income specified in the Tax Code of 1997 less the deductions and/or personal and additional exemptions, if any, authorized for such types of income, by the Tax Code or other special laws.
