“When the island re-opened last October 2018, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa undertook the initiative to stop using single-use plastic in the resort and changing to more environment-friendly materials. We no longer use plastic straws and cups, and changed the takeaway boxes to paper, plastic water bottles to glass, plastic bath amenities to ceramic,” said Mica Cordero, Director of Communications of Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa.
The hotel is a sustainability leader in Boracay. Its effort to go single-use plastic-free is a big step in making a stand for the environment. This is also the hotel’s way to educate guests and colleagues to opt for and support a more sustainable approach in the hotel’s daily operations, said Mica.
“Public interest was definitely piqued after the island reopened, as everyone wanted to experience the new and better Boracay. What’s important to note is the responsibility also of guests and tourists when going to the island, to do their part in the island’s sustainability.”
