AS THE country commemorates the 121st Independence day, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana reminded the people to “safeguard the freedom” that the ancestors of the land fought for.

“May we never forget the valiant sacrifices of our defenders and our veterans, who fought and protected our nation and people,” he said.

“We will show the world what true Filipinos are: a disciplined, patriotic race, with an ever burning sense of duty, ready to defend our nation against threats and foes. We may be a nation of scattered islands, but together, we stand as one,” he added.

Lorenzana also honored the modern-day heroes like the soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, airwomen, reservists, and civilian volunteers who “relentlessly guard our seas, lands, and air, and who tirelessly keep our communities safe.”

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Oscar Albayalde echoed Lorenzana’s Independence Day message and encouraged the people to always honor the country’s heroes who willingly gave their lives for our freedom.

“Dahil sa kanilang pagmamahal sa bayan, hindi nila pinayagang tumagal pa ang paghihirap ng ating mga kababayan,” he said in a speech during the Independence Day celebration in Camp Crame.

Albayalde urged his men and all the public servants to further strengthen public services in order to maintain and provide the Filipino people a peaceful and orderly place to live in.

He also hailed the cops, soldiers, firemen, teachers, farmers and street sweepers who continue to sacrifice for the benefit of many others.

(SunStar Philippines)
