BSU students recognized for their best research papers

ONCE again, Benguet State University graduating students competed during the 4th University Student Research Congress held on June 7, 2019 at the Northern Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center in which 8 student theses emerged as Best Research Papers.

The eight student research papers are among the 42 theses that competed during the activity. Fourteen competed for the Science and Technology (S & T) category and 19 for the Social category in the undergraduate level. Nine competed for the social category and 3 competed in the S & T category in the graduate level.

The entries for the University Student Research Congress were the winning research papers during the College Research Congress which was conducted earlier by the different Colleges in the University.

In the undergraduate level S & T category, the best research paper is “Design Fabrication and Performance Evaluation of a Motorized Oyster Crusher Machine” by Krisler Wansi and Eunice Mejos and their adviser is Engr. Genaro Macasieb.

The second place is “Aboveground Biomass Mapping of Benguet Pine (Pinus kesiya) Forest in Bokod Benguet” by Derek Bayer and Christine Parian and their adviser is Ms. Nova Doyog.

The third place is “Design Fabrication and Performance Evaluation Fluidized Bed Coffee Roaster” by Vanessa Rose Meana and Nazer Sarapeo Kimkiman and their adviser Engr. Alvin Dulay.

In the undergraduate level social category, the best research paper is “Ensuring Intergenerational Tie: Digitizing Pidilisan Folktales to Multi-media Based Learning System Applying Tradigital Framework” by Mac James Dacillo. His adviser is Dr. Paul Joseph Nuval.

The second place is “Value Chain Analysis of Swine (Sus scrofa) in Sablan, Benguet” by Justine P. Ayomen and his adviser is Dr. Madeline Kingan.

The third place is “The Governance of Local Economic Enterprise of Baguio City, and La Trinidad, Benguet” by Joylin Alcid, Mira Faith Ambugawon, Angeline Ballangan, Danice Bugarin, and Jerren Lasaten. Their adviser is Dr. Renebeth Donguiz.

In the graduate level Social category, the Best Research Paper is “Teacher-made Narrative and Student’s Achievement, Retention and Interest in Grade 9 Chemistry” by Russel Fitz Wadasen and his adviser is Dr. Joel Lubrica.

The best paper in the graduate level S & T category is “Fungal Contaminants of Arabica Coffee (Coffea arabica) Cherries and Green Coffee Beans from Selected Growing Areas in the province of Benguet” by Merlyn Denesia. Her adviser is Dr. Denisa Domondon.

The winners during the event were given certificates of recognition and will be receiving cash prizes in which 1st prize is P6,000, 2nd prize is P5,000 and 3rd prize is P4,000.

Dr. Carlito Laurean, vice president for research and extension, said that advisers of those who won Best Research Papers will also receive cash award of P10,000 and Plaque of Recognition as Outstanding Thesis Advisers during the BSU Foundation Anniversary on September 2019. This is the first time that thesis advisers are given awards in recognition of their assistance and support to their thesis advisees. The University through its Praise Committee institutionalized the yearly giving of award to outstanding thesis advisers which starts this year.

He added that the winners in the undergraduate level will also present their research papers in the 2nd Regional Student Research Congress to be held sometime in October 2019. The Regional Student Research Congress will be participated by the winning students from the 6 State Universities and Colleges in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

The winning papers will be published in the Mountain Journal of Science and Interdisciplinary Research of the University. In preparation to the publication of the research papers, the winners will attend for free the Writing-Workshop in Advancing Skills in Research Publications which was organized by the Research and Extension Publication Office.
